REVIEW ON HADA LABO HYDRATING LOTION(RICH)

Hi beautiful,

The popular Japanese hydrating toner Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich) has new upgraded formula &new packaging in 2023.

It has been upgraded from 4 Hyaluronic Acids to 5 Hyaluronic Acids , penetrate deep to hydrate every layer of the skin.

Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich)
Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich)

Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich)

Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich)
Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion (Rich)

New added ingredient : World’s first Fermented Hyaluronic Acid can even help to repair skin barrier, and balance the skin microbiome, which means balance the good and bad bacteria in our skin, for healthy skin.

Hydrate and prime your skin for further care. A rich, essence-type lotion with 4 types of Hyaluronic Acid in perfect ratio to absorb, lock-in, store and replenish water.
Suitable for normal/dry skin.

4 TYPES OF HYALURONIC ACID
Four types of Hyaluronic Acid deeply penetrate skin layers to lock in, replenish, and restore moisture for perfectly moisturized skin

ENHANCED HYDRATING EFFECTS
Different sizes of Hyaluronic Acid help penetrate to all skin levels, forming a high-density moisture barrier

FERMENTED HA
Forms a high density protective moisture barrier that protects the skin against external aggressors

CERAMIDE
Forms a moisture-retaining barrier to prevent moisture loss, strengthen skin's natural barrier, and protect skin from environmental damage

HIGH PENETRATING AMINO ACID
Fine molecule size easily penetrates to infuse moisture deep into skin, preparing it for the full benefit of the skincare products that follow.

What is the difference between Hada Labo hydrating lotion rich and light?

The Light variant is more watery and less emollient compared to the Rich variant, so if you have oily skin, it's a better option. If you have dry skin, go for the Rich one. And remember, the key to achieve soft, bouncy, supple, mochi-mochi skin is to make sure to apply the lotions using the patting motion technique.

REVIEW ON ISNTREE SUMMER REVIEW BUS EDITION

Hi beautiful,

Here is a review on special Isntree Summer Review Bus Edition.

South Korean brand, Isntree combines "island", "natural" and "tree" together for its name and guiding philosophy of being transparent in choice of ingredients using the most safe and purest from nature. Some of their most popular products are Aloe Soothing Gel, Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream and Sensitive Balancing Sun Protection Plus SPF50+ PA++++  All products are free from animal-testing.

Here are the products:
Isntree Chestnut BHA 2% Clear Liquid
Isntree Mugwort Calming Clay Mask
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF 50

I have combination acne prone skin and living in South East Asia.

Isntree Chestnut BHA 2% Clear Liquid
Isntree Chestnut BHA 2% Clear Liquid

On Isntree site it is written no difference in ingredient but according to some (reddit people) there are changes to ingredient
Texture: It is clear watery toner that absorbs well.  There is no added fragrance but it very faint scent which I can't describe (steel) .
Review: I use it with a cotton pad once per day without any other actives.  If you are new to actives then not more than 3times per week. Also use a sunscreen.   It does reduce acne breakouts, calm the skin, keep the skin clear, make skin smooth, clear blackheads and clear white heads.  It is also fungal safe.
Overall: An effective 2% BHA toner for blackheads and acne prone skin that is fungal acne safe.

Isntree Mugwort Calming Clay Mask
Isntree Mugwort Calming Clay Mask
Texture: smooth gray colour with dark green particles in it. It has scent of mugwort mixed with clay.
Review: It is a clay mask that isn't drying after 15minutes of application.  Removing it is easy with rinsing with water.  It does reduce oil and sebum production on my face after just one use.  Using it about 2 times per week does make the skin look calmer, clearer, lessen skin redness and softer skin.  I also breakout less with combination of using the 2% BHA toner as well.   It is a good mask to use before using makeup if one wants makeup to look good and last longer.

Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream
Texture: Soft opaque gel white lotion that absorbs well and dries down without residue.  Almost scentless, very faint scent of plastic that disappeared once dried down.
Review: It is a gel moisturiser that absorbs done to my skin, doesn't have any residue and doesn't pile under makeup.  It does keep my skin hydrated throughout 12hours, doesn't clogged my pores, calm my acne prone skin and doesn't cause acne.  On my drier area around my mouth it is not enough for sure.  It works as a good hydrating moisturiser for oily and combination skin type and during summer.

Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF50++++
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel SPF50++++

Texture: Opaque soft lotion that turned transparent once it dries down.  Almost scentless.
Review: It is made by a famous OEM which produce a lot of other famous Korean skincare brands.  The formulation is pretty stable and tested.  Suncreen goes on well on my skin and protect my skin throughout the day.  It does not have any whitecast no matter the amount applied.  It doesn't irritate or clogged my pores and easily wash off by the end of the day without residue left on my face.
Overall: A great chemical sunscreen without white cast suitable for any skin type.

REVIEW ON KIKU MASAMUNE JAPANESE SAKE BREWING SKIN CARE LOTION

Hi ferments lover XD,

I am trying to put up all the reviews for Kiku masamune products individually instead in one giant posts so here is the review on the lesser known products of Kiku masamune.

Here is a review on the Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion which is a hydrating toner.  This  is the lesser known compare to the Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion(high moist) because there is no rave on it.

Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion

Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion

Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion

Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion comes in a giant bottle of 500ml for about USD12 which is really affordable considering that it has sake filtrate in it.  The ingredients are shorter compare to the high moist one and it does have alchohol denat and added another paraben in it. It doesn't have malititol, methyl gluceth-10, hydroxyethylcellulose, phenoxyethanol, hydrogenated castor oil and no ceramide in it. The reason for the less moisturising effect.

The lotion comes out watery and it has the same signature smells of sake.  It get absorbs into the skin or evaporated into the air really fast as well compare to the high moist one without leaving any traces.  I think this is good for someone that hates feeling anything on the face for more that a few seconds.  It isn't as hydrating as the high moist one but it does have the silky feeling when I touch my skin with my hands.

Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion also has the same irritating pump which just spray out in any direction it wants.  It is affordable cheap toner that works great as mist for setting makeup, spray into oily hair and cooling mist in the hot weather.  Personally it will works great for someone with oily skin type in high humidity places.

Overall, Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion is more for oily skin type, during summer, high humidity that cause problems for products to absorb, hates waiting for products to absorb into the skin, no problem with ferments and animal ingredient in it.

As for preference, Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion and Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion(high moist) are both toners that I like to use depending on the weather and my skin condition.

*contains horse placenta . (a reader said no horse is harm for the placenta)

NEWS: THE LAUNCH OF A FREE BEAUTY SAMPLES WEBSITE MUFFIN.MY

Do you love a free website that you can redeem beauty products from writing reviews?  We finally have one in Malaysia now after waiting for so many years!  You can check my review HERE

NEWS: THE LAUNCH OF A FREE BEAUTY SAMPLES WEBSITE MUFFIN.MY

Muffin.my is officially launched! Introducing you Muffin.my, the first unbiased beauty review community in Malaysia, where we encourage members to share their beauty

experiences by writing reviews and earn points. From the points that they earned, they can redeem beauty products from our redemption catalog. Having more than 500 brands and 23,000 products in product library, Muffin.my connects beauty users with brands and products.

The Founder

The founder of Muffin.my, Ms Florence Chee shared h er story of the start up of the beauty community website. “Back in 2011, I was pursuing my professional degree in Manchester United. I was searching for beauty product review online and I found there was great information and reviews being shared in one of the top beauty review websites in the states, but I couldn’t find such website back in Malaysia. This is where I want to set up a one stop beauty review community in Malaysia,” she explained.

With a team of energetic and motivated staff (1 founder, 1 developer, 1 designer, 2 web administrator, & 1 PR manager), Florence tends to hand out to those who are in passion in beauty, skincare, and makeup products, to meet all their honest reviews on the products they are using. Florence described Muffin.my as a similar version of TripAdvisor website, but with more interactive elements. “We ensure all reviews are genuine and unbiased to ensure quality inspections,” explained Florence. After working in a web consulting firm for a year, she realized that working life isn’t her real goal. “Just as what Steve Jobs quoted “the only way to do great work is to love what you do”. I want to make my dream come true, and my dream is to create the largest beauty review

community.” “A lot of people asked me why use ‘muffin’ word for my website. I wanted to create a simple name where people will remember the websiteeasily. The word ‘muffin’ just popped out in my mind and the next day, I tried to register the domain, and volla, it is valid! So immediately, I registered my website www.muffin.my . However, many people thought that we are selling muffins!” laughed Florence. With 6 years of experience in internet retailing and marketing, Florence hopes that Muffin.my will reach

100,000 members in 1 year time. Currently, 92% of our members are women; with most of them are 19-29 years old.

Skin care was one of the most dynamic categories in Malaysian beauty and personal care, and with RM1.6 billion being spent annually by Malaysia, the vision to be one of the largest www.muffin.my

.

Future Plan

Our next step is to create a mobile-friendly app version, to allow people access to our website easily at anytime, anywhere. Our future plan is to create beauty forum, help beauty merchants to conduct online surveys or marketing research, mystery shoppers and who knows? Maybe we will sell beauty products in the future!

There are two different product ranges under Lapurete:

1. The Okuru range - designed to tackle and reverse the more advanced signs of aging, for users aged 30+ and above;

2. The Wakame range – designed to tackle the first signs of aging, for users aged 20+ and early 30s.

TNS SKIN LAB LAUNCHES LAPURETE NATURAL COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE RANGE TO MALAYSIA MARKET

Lapurete Okuru Range

Lapurete is the world’s first range of anti-wrinkle products containing a natural Botox alternative, Okuru. Okuru is a plant native to a remote part of Western Africa, where locals have been using it for centuries for its high nutritional food value and skin benefits.

A few years ago French scientists set out to investigate the secret behind the local inhabitants’ flawless skin and discovered that Okuru contains a combination of peptides that minimise wrinkles in a similar way to Botox, but are natural, safe and can be applied topically without the need for invasive injections.

Professor Barrie Finnin, former Chair of Formulation Science at Monash University, decided to test this theory in an attempt to prove it didn’t work. Instead, what he found was astounding. “We independently performed clinical testing of Okuru, Lapurete’s hero ingredient, and found that the appearance of wrinkles was reduced by up to 39.8% in 3 weeks,” said Professor Finnin. “These results are impressive! I believe that the Lapurete range is a great option for women who do not want to resort to cosmetic surgery procedures,” he said.

The Okuru peptide is the key active ingredient in the Lapurete Okuru anti-aging range. The range offers modern women a convenient, inexpensive, natural but most effective 3-step anti-aging skincare system that can fit effortlessly into their daily routines:

• Step 1 – Mild Creme Facial Cleanser: The exotic and luxurious Mild Creme Facial Cleanser removes dirt and impurities, whisks away facial and eye make-up and tones the skin. The cleanser contains Okuru and passionflower which has been used by the indigenous people of the Amazon for centuries for treating skin conditions, enhancing relaxation and as an aphrodisiac!

 • Step 2 – Revitalising Eye Creme: Okuru targets expression lines such as crow’s feet while a powerful combination of peptides from sweet pea, soy and rice bran and yeast proteins combine to drastically reduce the appearance of dark circles and eye bags, providing a unique all-round effective eye treatment.

• Step 3 (Day) – Protective Day Creme: A combination of peptides from sweet pea dramatically increases skin firmness and elasticity while Okuru works powerfully to minimize the appearance of expression lines.

• Step 3 (Night) – Revitalising Night Creme: An extract from the Resurrection Plant drenches the skin with intense moisturization to combat the harsh ageing effects of dry skin. This amazing extract has been clinically proven to provide up to 24 hour moisturization and has been shown to provide powerful anti-oxidant properties enhancing the skin’s ability to combat environmental damage.

In addition, Lapurete offers a highly concentrated Okuru Double Intensity serum for those who demand more intensive and faster results.

Clinically tested and proven results of the Okuru range:

 Reduce the appearance of wrinkles such as crow’s feet by 39.8% after 3 weeks

 Increase the appearance of skin elasticity by 35% after 6 weeks

 Reduce the appearance of dark circles by 32% in 4 weeks

 Reduce the appearance of eye puffiness by 25% in 4 weeks

TNS SKIN LAB LAUNCHES LAPURETE NATURAL COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE RANGE TO MALAYSIA MARKET

Lapurete Wakame Range

One of the main causes of skin aging is the breakdown of collagen and elastin from environmental exposure such as UVA radiation. This results in the appearance of the first signs of ageing with the formation of wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

The Wakame range is designed to cater for younger users who are experiencing the first signs of aging, but are looking for products that are effective, but are lighter and less oily than the typical anti-aging products.

Japanese women are renowned for their radiant, youthful skin which is attributed to their high consumption of Wakame seaweed, known as the “beauty preserver”.

Wakame (the key ingredient of this range) is a type of seaweed which is known for their ability to survive in their harsh environment by producing a powerful substance called fucoidan. They are full of antioxidants like Zinc, Calcium, Iodine, Iron, Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B12 and C.

The Wakame range is packed with clinically proven, naturally derived, marine based active ingredients that protect the skin and repair the first signs of aging. Apart from Wakame extract, two of the other powerful marine active ingredients include Thermus Thermophilus Ferment Extract and Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract.

Thermus Thermophilus is a marine bacterium that is a super-antioxidant that protects the skin against UV and environmental attacks, whilst Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract is a marine bacteria peptide found in the Antarctica known for its proven power to regenerate and protect the skin by retaining moisture and water, heal wounds, increase collagen and elastin production, and improve hydration.

There are only 3 daily skincare products in the Wakame range, making it an extremely simple and user friendly 3-step skincare system for the active younger generation:

Step 1 – Hydrating Foam Cleanser & Toner – This self-foaming cleanser removes dirt and impurities, whisks away facial and eye make-up, while hydrating and toning the skin.

Step 2 – Multi Active Eye Repair - Multi action reduces the appearance of wrinkles, eye bags and dark circles.

Step 3 – Protect & Repair Lotion – This super light lotion protects the skin from UVA damage, dryness, irritation, evens up skin tone and reduces the appearance of the first signs of ageing. Clinically tested and proven results of the Wakame range:

Reduces The Appearance Of:

 Wrinkles by 13% in 4 weeks

 Dark Circles by 32% in 4 weeks

 Eye puffiness by 25% in 4 weeks

Improves The Appearance Of:

 Skin smoothness by 14% in 4 weeks

 Skin elasticity by 21% in 4 weeks

This care cream diffuses hydrating plant active ingredients in the skin, holding water in the skin and giving dehydrated skin back its radiance and beauty.

The skin is well hydrated and protected, it feels completely comfortable again and the wrinkles caused by dehydration are plumped.

ACTIVE COMPONENT
Aloe Vera Extracts : Nourish, hydrate, facilitate cell regeneration and soften the skin.
Jojoba Oil : Nourishes the skin and reinforces its hydrolipidic film.

USE : Apply daily, morning and evening, to the whole of the face.

There is no spatula provided so I suggest you to have one and not dip your fingers in it to avoid contamination.

MARY COHR LIGHT MOISTURISING CREAM

The jar is actually quiet heavy since it is made of glass.  So if you are bringing it for travelling, I suggest that you transfer it to the smaller glass jar for lighter travelling.

The cream is opaque white and turn transparent after applying on the skin leaving a light sheen on the skin.
I love the smell of the cream. It is light and surely not overpowering.  The smell lasted for few hours after applying so don't worry even if you do not really like the smell.

It is certainly is light and not too heavy on my skin so I use it during the day when I need something extra to help hydrate the skin.  It doesn't leave a greasy feeling so I sure do like it.  It moisturises the skin and doesn't cause breakout so I use this during the day.  No SPF so you could use this at night too.=)

Mary Cohr Light Moisturizing Cream retails at RM158.  Made in France.

MY CURRENT SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR 2014

"I love my skin"

MY CURRENT SKINCARE ROUTINE for acne prone skin

Yes, most of us will love our skin only when it is nice and most of the time it is acting like an emotional teenager.  I tend to neglect my skin when it was nice but now I am  a skincare junkie and I love skincare products more than makeup because I think having a good skin is better than 'hiding' it under a thick layer of makeup.  I have very low self image when my skin is bad  although I know everyone is not looking at me but I still do feel down.  I usually wear very little makeup because I am lazy and I like to just go out with my bare skin if I'm in a hurry.

I use up skincare products faster than makeup.  My skincare products may change but the routine goes about the same or maybe a few tweak here and then.  All I can say having a good skin is not a walk in the park since I have troublesome skin.  Well, everything comes with a price.  If you are hardworking, then it will show in long run.

I have a few skincare routine depending on the condition of my skin.  Most of the time especially when I am travelling, my skin tend to get super dry because I couldn't carry out my normal skincare maintenance.  I am a light traveller and so do not carry many skincare products that I usually use.  I usually bring only cleanser and moisturiser with me which is actually not enough for me at night. XP

Sorry, not naming all the skincare products as the skincare products is too long and besides, I change some of the skincare products one at a time.  There is a few long time favourite but I just could not be loyal to only one  masks, serum and essence.  I know most people would run over to the dermatologist for whatever small reasons but since the place I am staying is inconvenient, I have to care for it myself.  Most of the skincare products are of mixture and not just from one particular brand.  These products can be found in Malaysia either in drugstores, Sasa, local pharmancies or shops.  I bought some online but not everything since I do like the feeling of browsing and choosing the products myself =).

Normal maintenance for morning
cleanser
toner (optional) sometimes I use and most of the time, I just skip it.
moisturiser (currently Kiehls)
sunblock

normal maintenance at night
makeup remover (If I wear makeup&physical type of sunblock)
cleanser
booster
serum
moisturiser (loving the Kahina argan oil)

Pampering session (alternative)
cleanser
pore pack/scrub
clay mask/mud mask
booster
serum/essence/ampoule (don't have favourite yet) (optional)
sheet mask- I have many (optional)
moisturiser
sleeping mask (no favourite yet) (had tried many in the past including few famous ones)

Trouble skin care
cleanser
mandelic essence/Clindamycin/sulfur/differin (make sure the skin is dry before applying the acne 'medicine' on face)
moisturiser at the area not affected (I alternate these products to be effective)
beauty oil (love beauty oil)
sunblock(day time only)  I use La Roche Posay and Biore

I usually don't use this trouble skin care for a long term since they might turn ineffective later.  I also usually alternate the clindamycin, sulfur and differin and make sure I don't use all of them on the same time.  Trust me, nothing good comes from using too many of acne prone products at the face at the same time.  It will only results in red inflamed skin that will need weeks and months to heal.

What I noticed is that most with acne prone skin tend to change their whole skincare products to those wrong ones.  Many are unsure of their skin type and thus tend to use the wrong products which cause more pimples to pop up later.  Acne prone skin doesn't need tons of skincare products but they need a very good light sunblock, some acne products and some detox to help with it.

Please do not ignore the pimples popping out as it usually indicate something is wrong with the way you take care of your skin, lifestyle or your hormones (Number.1 havoc for acne).  I do detox my skin once in a week by drinking herbal tea such as Trudox, Japanese green tea or some herbal tea.

The products here is just recommendation and I do not earn any money from them.  The opinions expressed here are my own and honest as always.

NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST GEL SPF30 PA++
NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST GEL SPF30 PA++ GEL

NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST GEL SPF30 PA++ is to complement the existing Hydro Boost series features innovative 12hour progressive release system that releases moisturise to dry skin cells throughout the day.  Its refreshing gel formula with purified Hyaluronic Acid and Olive extract for a hydrated, luminous and bouncy skin.  It replenishes and retains water all the night.

Al right, I only tried the 5ml samples that I have and 5ml finishes fast with this kind of humid weather we have here. It has been few months since it last rained and it is already 40 Celsius here.  Yes, it is very hot here.  I think SPF 30 is not enough for such hot weather unless you stay indoor all the time.  The gel texture is quite light and not greasy.  I find the gel smell something like typical body shampoo or soap.

The gel contains dimethicone and glycerin for skin hydration.  I find that the gel does absorb well into my skin leaving my skin quite soft to the touch.  My skin is smooth and there is a dewy look. The moisturiser lasted few hours before I sweating too much and my skin become too oily after few hours to really test it out. It is 40 Celsius here X(  ! I think this suits people with normal skin to dry skin and for one who like dimethicone.

ROSKEN SKIN REPAIR DAILY MOISTURISER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Got this Rosken Skin repair daily moisturiser for sensitive skin because the sales girl at guardian show me this when I was looking for moisturiser.

ROSKEN SKIN REPAIR DAILY MOISTURISER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
Rosken Skin repair daily moisturiser for sensitive skin

ROSKEN SKIN REPAIR DAILY MOISTURISER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Glycerine, Cetearyl alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Caprylic/ capric Triglyceride, Isopropyl Myristate, Glyceryl Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed oil, Olea Europaea (olive) Fruit oil, Glycine soja (soybean) oil, Sorbitan Stearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Carbomer, Dimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ethylhexyglycerine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Sodium hydroxide.

ROSKEN SKIN REPAIR DAILY MOISTURISER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

There was a time when my skin's hurt because I hurt it.  I couldn't use my normal moisturiser because everything sting.  Even cleanser sting and I have to use water on my face.  The only moisturiser I could use is Cetaphil but then I decided to buy this because this is cheaper .  Besides, I saw that this doesn't contain anything that might trigger my 'angry' skin and well if it doesn't work at least I can use it on my legs again.  My legs is always receiving end of anything but I don't know why it is still dry.

Overall, it does help with the moisture but I have to keep applying every  four hours if you have really dry skin as this is not moisturising enough.  The other range contains mineral oil so that is why decided to buy this instead.  I don't want to anger my already 'angry' skin.

There is no fragrance, colouring or other ingredients that might trigger your skin sensitivity  and the cheap price too so this is quite good.  It does sink it fast or perhaps my skin was too dry that it absorb everything immediately.  My skin is in a phase of transition now which surprised me.  Yes, one can also break out even with dry and ageing skin.  So, do preventive measure before that.

Overall, if your skin is in sensitive phase or after some peeling procedure you could use this moisturiser.  This is not suitable for dry skin or ageing skin as it sink in too fast and the moisturise effect only lasted at most four hours before you start seeing the dry patches or flakes again.

Products retails at RM14.90 for 75ml.  Made in Australia

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ESSENCE, SERUM, LOTION, AMPOULE, EMULSION, GEL, TONER, BOOSTER,CREAM, FLORAL WATER&FINISHER?

the differences between essence, serum, lotion, ampoule, emulsion, gel, toner, booster, cream and floral water

10 years ago, skincare products were much simpler. I only have cleanser, toner and also moisturizer which people called cream. The extra products that I have would be sunblock I guess. Fast forward ten years and we have so many products out there in the market until I can’t even differentiate what is essence, serum , lotion, cream and even booster! One day I was looking at my aunt skincare products and asked her what is the differences between essence and cream but I didn't get the exact answer that I want! Some would just tell me to put it after toner or something. I got confused with so many things to put and I usually use mixture of brands and products.  I was so lost with all these skincare products terms.

So, today I am just going to share the meaning of those products in layman term.  Hopefully, it will be of help to you =).  Here is another newer pictorial form for better understanding.

Okay, let’s start with the most difficult one

1. TONER/MIST/SKIN REFINER/SKIN BALANCER/SOFTENER/LOTION(Japanese toner)
Okay, this is as the name suggested they are actually toner. While products in western countries are known as toner,

Updated on 3/10/2014:  Now there is even western toner written as lotion so do be careful and check the description before using them.

A) Korean name their toner as Mist/toner/ Skin Refiner/ Skin balancer/ Skin hydrator/lotion/skin/water .

For examples,
Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner
Isntree Chestnut BHA 2% Clear Liquid
Celimax Noni Moisture Balancing Toner
Pyunkang yul essence toner
Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Unscented Toner
Althea Bare Essentials Primer Water
Swanicoco A.C control care skin toner
By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water
THEFACESHOP Jeju Volcanic Lava Pore Toner
COSRX AHA / BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner
Klairs supple preparation facial toner
Primera Organience Water
COSRX Centella Water Alcohol Free Toner
Laneige Skin Refiner

B) Japanese on the other hand name their toner lotion or softener.
For examples,
Kose Sekkisei lotion
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion(high moist)
Kiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion
Shiseido softener

C)Taiwanese just name their toner as toner to lessen the confusion but their products work like Japanese and Korean lotion.

For examples,
Shills Miracle Lift 3d Firming Gel Toner
White Formula Super Moist Light Toner with Hyaluronic Acid

D) Western toner is so much easier to understand. It will always end with the word toner.
 For examples
 Biotherm micro exfoliating purifying toner.
 Dr.Lewinn' Purifying Toner

Low pH toner -you probably heard this from reddit or some blogger about using low pH toner.  It just means using toner that has pH of about 4-5.5 for the purpose of lowering down the pH of your face.  While it is already debunked that pH of your face doesn't matter, using low pH toner is recommended for those that have water above pH7 and for those that use cleanser above pH 6 to 9.
You can check out this post HERE if you need low pH toner.

E) Mist are hydrating toner water that contains cooling properties and hydration.  How fine the mist comes out depend on the nozzle.  It is mostly in bottle.  Koreans or Asian usually carry this to just spray on the face when it is hot or they feel dry without touching face.  It is most use in summer.  It is best to use hydrating mist instead of just plain water.

For examples,
Manyo Bifida Ampoule Mist
Heimish Bulgarian Rose Water Mist Serum
Melvita Organic Beauty Mist
Always21 Soothing and Refresh Aloe Vera 95% Mist
First Cosmetic Mulbit Medist (vitamin Mist)
The Farm Herb Rejuvenating Facial Toning Mist

Basically, the texture in this categories are watery just like water.  Those hydrating ones can be just sprayed on the face. Most Japanese lotion can be use on compressed mask sheets and used as sheet masks.

Western toners are usually those clarifying one where you will use the cotton pad to swipe across the face.  It can't be use as mask !

Western and Asian toner are not the same although it is usually use after cleaning (There is some certain products that the toner or lotion are used as 3rd products because of adding booster) .

There is a difference between how western and Asian toner are used.  Do not assume that Asian lotion and Western toner are the same.

2. ESSENCE, SERUM, AMPOULE

A) Ampoule contains high concentration of ingredients target for specific purpose. They are more expensive than serum. This is because ampoule contains the lightest texture, penetrate into the skin faster and provide the fastest results within a short time. Normally, hydrating or makeup ampoules are use by the makeup artist for a bridal wedding to make the makeup last long. There are also many types of ampoules and they are generally in form of vial to avoid the highly reactive ingredients get oxidized by the air.

For examples:
LANBELLE Ultra Lifting EGF Ampoule
Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum
Skin1004 Madagascar centella asiatica 100 ampoule
Max Clinic Deep and Deeper Meso Change ampoule
Doclab Hyaluronic Acid Face Ampoule
MELVITA NECTAR BRIGHT BRIGHTENING CONCENTRATE
La belle acnex ampoule

B) Serum contain higher concentration of ingredients than essence.  It also target specific skin concern. Therefore they are more expensive than essence. Serums also contain thicker texture than essence. There are many types of serum ranging from anti-aging capsules serum, pore tightening serum and brightening serum.  There are oil based and water based serum.

In 2024 there is the Korean before makeup serum too  d'Alba White Truffle First Spray Serum.
AXIS-Y Dark Spot Correcting Glow Serum

Antipodes Worship Superfruit Antioxidant Serum
clarins multi active skin renewal serum

- Oil based serum are in oil form for stabilizing properties.  It usually contains very UV ingredients such as Vitamin C or retinol.

Example of oil based serum:

Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop
Seven wonders moroccan argan oil serum

-  There are also serum that is in form of BHA, AHA which is supposed to be treated as 'actives' since they have low pH.
SOME BY MI AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum
Neulii teatree BHA blemish control serum
Swiss Line Cell Shock Age Intelligence Perfect Skin

-also serum but it is actually peel (need to remove from face after 1min&once a month usage)
So Natural Red Peel Tingle Serum (Korean dupe of the The Ordinary red serum

Unique serum that use Reedle
VT Cosmetics reedle 100

very thick serum for scaring Palmer Scar Serum

C) Essence contains concentrate of ingredients for specific purposes. It is the least concentrate among ampoule and serum. Essence are generally watery and light so don't mistake it with toner. Some are called treatment water but it is actually essence.

whitening essence to brighten the face, pore control essence to control the pore and skin repairing essence.

For examples,
BOM Just One Houttuynia Cordata Extract
MIXSOON Bean Essence
Jumiso Snail EX Ultimate Boost Facial Essence
By Wishtrend Quad Active Boosting Essence
Manyo Factory Galactomyces Niacin
Melvita brightening essence
Hansaeng Cosmetics RIN Bi-gyeol Soo Essence
Cremorlab Mineral Treatment Essence ,
SKII facial treatment essence.

-oil based essence such as Shills Mandelic Acid essence .  It contains mandelic acid which is a form of AHA.

- There is All in one Essence from the trending 2018 skincare diet (using only 3-5 products for skincare routine).  It is an essence that covers the step of toner, fermented products, essence and moisturiser.
For example: Hyggee All In One Essence

The level of concentrate ingredients from the highest one would be ampoule > serum> essence .
The level of texture from the lightest one would be essence > ampoule  > serum

You could check this post Here to know if you need essence or serum.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ESSENCE, SERUM, LOTION, AMPOULE, EMULSION, GEL, TONER, BOOSTER & CREAM?

3. LOTION, CREAM, EMULSION and GEL

A)Korean lotion is actually their light moisturizer. Example COSRX Oil Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion (with Birch Sap)

B)Japanese lotion means it is toner. Example of Japanese lotion would be the Kose Sekkisei Lotion , Kikumasamune sake high moist lotionKiku masamune Japanese Sake Brewing Skin care Lotion

C)Emulsion is a light moisturizer. Mostly people with combination skin or oily skin would choose emulsion because of the lighter texture but still provide the moisture needed. Normally it is water based.

For examples,
Swanicoco A.C emulsion
Kose Sekkisei emulsion
Avène cleanance expert emulsion
Kikumasamune Sake emulsion
Primera Organience Emulsion
L'occitane Shea Face Soothing Fluid
Snow Fairy Hydro White Emulsion

D) Cream is thicker since it contains more oil inside.  Cream provides more oil for those with dry skin or for usage during winter.  However, snail cream are usually very light.  There are many type of creams for examples whitening, anti-aging, hydrating and for acne. In 2019, there is a new Vegan Korean brand cream.  There is also some that called the gel moisturiser cream.

For examples,
Dr.Ceuracle Purifine 80 Cream
The Pure Lotus Youth Biotics Lotus Probiotic Concentrate Cream
By Wishtrend Vitamin A-mazing Bakuchiol Night Cream
Althea Bare Essentials Fixer Cream
Egyptian magic cream
skin shop premium secret snail vital mucin cream,
Mary Cohr light moisturising cream
The Yeon Yowoo Brightening Cream
Elizavecca Aqua Hyaluronic Acid Water Drop Cream

Massage cream- it is cream that people use for massage on the face. Basically, you apply the massage a little on the face, then massage the face until it become transparent. then rinse the face away with it.  It is better for dry skin during winter.

Lafine Massage cream

Gel moisturizers usually contain humectants like silicone or gylerin for oily skin. Gel is also lighter than cream and emulsion. Some like it for the fresh texture.  If you don't mind spending the money, you can use eye gel as face moisturiser.
Examples,
Skin1004 Centella Soothing cream
Pyunkang yul Balancing gel
Alive:Lab Multi Ice Cream
COSRX Oil Free Ultra Moisturizing Lotion (with Birch Sap)
Mizon Dist Clean up Protect Cream
Neutrogena Hydra Boost water gel
Phb Skin Restore Gel Aloe Vera
Swiss Line By Dermalab Aqua Vitale De Puffing Eye Gel .

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ESSENCE, SERUM, LOTION, AMPOULE, EMULSION, GEL, TONER, BOOSTER & CREAM

4.  BOOSTER

Booster is something that is put before the serum/essence to boost the efficiency of the essence/serum.  The texture is generally very light and you will notice that the skincare penetrate into the skin much faster than if you are not using booster. The sequence to use booster for Korean and Western is also different depending on your toner (korean or western toner)

Examples of booster would be Dr. Jart V7 Booster and Dermalogica booster.

5.FLORAL WATER and MIST
Most people would find this confusing whether it is a toner, a booster or a moisturiser.  For me, it is just like the name suggested- water infused with flowers.  One can use this as toner, mist or even moisturiser.  It is really just like water, it can calm the skin and moisturise the skin as it contain glycerine.  However, it is not enough to moisturiser the skin during winter.
TIAM Vita B3 Source Mist Toner
Melvita Narcissus extraordinary water
Melvita Extraordinary water
Heaven on Earth Lavendar Floral water

6.FINISHER
Okay, In September 2014 there is already the skin finisher which means to be a skincare products which makes the skin looks glow to the point of flawless. It's called a skin finisher because it goes on last (over toner, serums/essence/ and moisturisers) and before your cc cream or foundation. It is used during the day.  It can comes in form or spray or bottle. There are hair finisher but this finisher is for skin and it is already a rave in Korea.  Skin finisher is NOT A PRIMER NOR it is a MAKEUP because the skin finisher seal all the good things about your skincare products into your skin making it super flawless.  According to them, skin finisher is the key to have amazingly dewy skin flawless skin.  Examples of skin finisher would be Sulwhasoo Luminate Essential Finisher, Su:m miracle finisher and many more.

7. PEELING GEL
Peeling gel is actually exfoliator for sensitive skin which is much more gentle than scrubs.  Generally, Korean prefer peeling gel because it helps to exfoliate the skin without the harshness and peeling gel can immediately brighten the skin. Normally, it is use before using a sheet mask for best effect.
Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel
Secret Key Lemon Sparkling Peeling Gel
Pyunkang yul peeling gel
UGB peeling gel
Cure Natural Aqua Gel

7. POWDER PRODUCTS
Brands are coming with powder products because of the airport liquid restrictions so there are many products in powder form.  Some are spot treatment and some are cleansers at the moment.

Alivelab Red Spot Lemon Powder
Alivelab Centella Dressing Powder (spot calming treatment)
Ishtar Cleansing Clay powder (gentle cleanser)
By Wishtrend Green Tea and Enzyme Powder Wash (exfoliating cleanser)
Comeitto rice powder wash (Japan) ( gentle cleanser)

That are what I know about the current type of skincare products in the market.  The list is sure going to be long and I will update this from time to time.  There are many texture such as jelly, pudding and more texture coming out in the market every second so I know it is going to be more and more confusing next time.  Even the vocabulary list for skincare products are just going longer.  Do forgive me or correct me if I made any mistake in writing this as I wrote it base on my common experience in skincare .

I hope that it will help you in making choices for your skincare products.
